What is personal counselling?

Everyone needs a healthy place where they can go and talk to someone without the fear of being judged. That is the core of what counselling really is. Many people already have that in their lives, but in an age of increasing isolation and loneliness, many people don’t. That’s where a good counsellor comes in. They create a safe space for you to go, gain some clarity and work through whatever is troubling you. It’s a partnership where you’re the expert on you and the counsellor brings a knowledge of best practices for creating mental health. For more information, I recommend reading What is Clinical Counselling? at the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors website.

How does it work?

You contact me and we set a time for a 20m call.  In that first call, we see if we are a good fit for your personality and issues.  If we aren't I help you find someone who is.  From there we book a 50m session and get to work.

What times are you available?

Currently, I book clients from Monday to Friday in the evenings.  My first session typically starts at 5:00PM with my last one starting at 8:00PM.   That being said, please keep in mind that I work with a lot of people and some of these times may become unavailable. I will do my best to find a time that works for both of us.

How long is a session and how often do I come?

Sessions are typically 50m long (that's so I can catch my breath and make some notes in between clients) and typically clients come once per week.

What do we talk about?

Whatever is on your mind.  You're the expert on you, we'll talk about what you need to talk about most.

When is counselling finished?

Whenever the client wants it to be really.  Usually, there's a natural end as the client acquires the knowledge and skills they need to deal with whatever brought them to counselling in the first place.  How long that takes depends on a lot of factors so it varies.

How much does counselling cost?

Currently, I charge the amount recommended by the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors which is $150 per 50m session.

Are you covered by insurance?

In BC counselling is not currently covered by MSP, but many extended health plans like Blue Cross do include counselling.  Check with your provider.  If they cover it you can submit your receipts which include my RCC#22341 and get reimbursed.

Can I see you in person?

No, I currently see my private practice clients online, I do not have a physical office.

What type of issues and people do you work with?

I work with all types of people, typically with concerns like

  • Trauma
  • Depression & Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Overwhelmed and Isolated
  • Meaninglessness in life
  • Men’s issues
  • Adolescent issues
  • Student support
  • Sport Performance
